Yes, the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires all CDL holders, including owner-operators, to participate in a random drug and alcohol testing consortium. This applies whether you operate independently or are employed by a company. Compliance with DOT regulations is mandatory to ensure safety and adherence to federal guidelines.
At DNA 2 U, we simplify annual reporting and DOT audits for our clients. By enrolling in our DOT drug testing consortium, you gain access to a structured system that keeps all required documentation organized and readily available, including:
✔ Drug & Alcohol Testing Policies
✔ Test Results & Records
✔ Consortium Enrollment Documentation

✔ All Other Required Forms
With DNA 2 U, you’ll have a reliable support system to ensure compliance, streamline audits, and easily meet annual reporting requirements. Let us handle the paperwork while you focus on running your business.
• DNA 2 U manages random drug testing pools.
• Drivers are selected quarterly as required by DOT.
• Employers and drivers receive notification of testing locations.
• Failure to complete a random test may result in non-compliance penalties.
Test result turnaround times depend on the type of test and the outcome. Alcohol test results are available immediately and can be printed onsite at an approved testing facility. For DOT drug testing, negative results are typically recorded and reported through our secure channels within two to three business days. If a drug test returns a positive result, a medical review officer (MRO) will first contact the employee to determine if there is a valid medical explanation before confirming the final result.
At DNA 2 U, we offer multiple drug testing collection methods tailored to your specific needs. Each method has its advantages and limitations, so we recommend consulting with one of our specialists to determine the best option for you.
Urinalysis Drug Testing
Urinalysis is the most commonly used drug testing method and is an approved method for DOT drug testing. It is fast, cost-effective, and widely accepted. However, it comes with certain requirements and limitations.
For accurate results, testing must be conducted in a private restroom where the sink and toilet are disabled, and a bluing agent is added to the toilet bowl. Additionally, to ensure compliance, the test must be administered by a collector of the same sex as the individual being tested.
Urinalysis is effective at detecting drug use over an extended period but may not accurately indicate very recent drug use.
Hair Drug Testing (COMING SOON)
Hair drug testing is less common but offers an extended detection window. During the test, a small section of hair (less than 1 inch wide) is clipped, preferably from the base of the scalp, and placed in a specimen container. While this method is simple and non-invasive, some individuals may object to having their hair cut.
Hair testing provides the longest detection period, identifying drug use over several months. However, it is not suitable for detecting recent drug use within the past few weeks and is not an approved method for DOT drug testing.
Oral Saliva (COMING SOON)
DOT oral fluid drug testing was officially approved as of June 1, 2023. However, as of May 16, 2023, this testing method is not yet operational since no laboratories have been certified for oral fluid drug testing. According to regulations, DOT oral fluid drug testing can only commence once at least two laboratories receive certification from the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

According to DOT drug testing regulations, once an employee is notified of the required test, they must proceed immediately to an approved testing facility to complete the test.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) mandates enrollment in a drug consortium pool for individuals who:
• Hold a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and operate a vehicle over 26,000 lbs.
• Drive a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers.
• Transport hazardous materials requiring placarding.
Additionally, these individuals must establish a compliant drug testing program as part of DOT regulations.
At DNA 2 U, we ensure your compliance with FMCSA & DOT regulations by handling random drug testing pools, reporting, and documentation.
